When Your Three-Year-Old Hits

It’s fairly normal for a child of three to hit when they don’t get their way. You want to teach them to be able to control themselves and not have to intervene. Try and recognize the reason behind the hitting, like is she angry she has to leave the park? Is she angry because she can’t have a cookie? Let her know you understand her anger but that hitting is not ok. If she stops, let her know you are proud of her for being able to stop herself. If she continues, let her know you will help her stop hitting if she is too upset to do so. Children need to grasp that you are not rejecting their feelings but that you will help them if they feel out of control. This approach will  teach self-discipline.
